Types of coverage
Full coverage is defined differently by different agents. Some agents say you have full coverage when you have liability, comp and collision. They often forget about uninsured and medical payments coverage.
Comprehensive, also known as fire, theft, and vandalism covers your car for exactly these things.
Collision covers your car for a collision with anything at all.
Comp and collision is always required by the bank if you have a loan on your vehicle, until the loan is paid off. this protects the bank's money if the car is destroyed.
Full coverage is _________. Full coverage pricing is based on the value of your car.
What is liability insurance?
Liability insurance is financial protection, on your behalf, from an insurance company in the event of an accident caused by you.
Liability is required by law in the state of RI if you wish to register a vehicle. YOU MUST HAVE AN ACTIVE INSURANCE ID CARD WITH YOU WHEN YOU GO TO DMV OR YOU CANNOT REGISTER YOUR CAR.
Liability coverage will pay for damages for bodily injury and property damage to another party in the event of an automobile accident and only the other party. Your person and your property are unprotected, but liability insurance protects you from being held responsible for the other party's damages.
There are different limits of liability you can purchase. There are also additional coverages you can add to a liability policy. 25/50/25 is the minimum required by RI law.
How is that different from uninsured motorist coverage?
Uninsured motorist coverage is an option you can add to your liability policy to offer some protection for yourself. Unlike liability insurance it is not required by the State of Rhode Island.
There are 2 types of uninsured motorist coverage. The first being uninsured motorist bodily injury coverage (UMBI), and the other being uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD).
UMBI provides coverage to you in the event you are struck by another vehicle and they do not have insurance. This coverage will pay for injuries to you and anyone in your vehicle.
UMPD provides coverage for your vehicle if you are struck by an uninsured vehicle.
These coverages can be purchased for an additional fee.
Medical payments coverage is cheap and very good to have.
Medical payments insurance will cover you, or anyone in your vehicle, usually up to 5000 each, for hospital and doctor expenses due to an accident whether its your fault or not. There are some other advantages to this coverage that most agents do not tell you about.
